Two Telugu tentpoles just booked a month apart, and the arithmetic is already arguing back. According to published reports from a Hyderabad press interaction, Sandeep Reddy Vanga said SS Rajamouli–Mahesh Babu’s Varanasi is the bigger film, and that Prabhas’s Spirit has “around 37 days” of runway before it lands. The announced schedule, meanwhile, offers 33 calendar days.
On paper: Spirit is slated for March 5, 2027. Varanasi is dated April 7, 2027 — a date Rajamouli himself posted. Makers of Spirit have also publicly pushed back on delay rumours, saying the film is “very much on track” for March 5, as previously announced. Both are still announcements, not notarised contracts, but they are the dates trade and fans are working with.
Vanga’s “That film is bigger” line was reported from the same Hyderabad Q&A, where he also joked off any talk of shifting Spirit’s date. There isn’t an official video or transcript in the open to quote from, so file it under reported remarks — and under “we’ll see” until either team blinks.
The only certain thing here is that Telugu cinema will carry its own summer, without waiting for Delhi or any national-party photo op to bless a poster. The BJP and Congress can keep fighting over credit for airports; the theatres will be full either way.
