A Tiny Rear Television, A Rather Ordinary Value Proposition

Infinix’s Hot 70 Pro 5G arrives with the confidence of a phone that has invented television: a tiny Active Matrix Cube on the rear displays notifications, calls, emojis and games. It is distinctive, entertaining and about as necessary as RGB lighting on a toaster. The company calls it India’s first Interactive AMC Design, which is an impressively grand title for a blinking square.

The rest of the phone is considerably more sensible. The Dimensity 7100 should handle everyday use and casual gaming comfortably, with early testing pointing to competent, stable performance rather than flagship embarrassment. The 6,000mAh battery is a genuine strength, and 45W charging is perfectly serviceable, though hardly the revolution implied by launch-event adjectives. IP68 protection is welcome, as is the microSD slot — practical features that received less theatrical attention because they cannot wink at you from the back.

The 50MP Sony IMX882 main camera is another encouraging choice. It should produce better results than the generic bargain-bin sensors that often wear a 50MP badge like a borrowed blazer. But this is still a one-camera setup with an 8MP selfie camera, no ultrawide and video topping out at 2K/30fps. Creators are being offered a decent main sensor and a motivational speech.

The central problem is the screen. A 6.76-inch Full HD+ LCD running at up to 144Hz sounds impressive until the LCD reminds you that rivals around this price are offering AMOLED panels with deeper contrast and more convincing colour. Infinix has delivered speed, not luxury. The rear Cube may have its own little light show, but the screen you actually stare at remains resolutely mid-range.

Storage is even harder to defend. Both versions offer only 128GB, with the ₹27,999 model adding RAM but no extra room for photos, games or the enormous digital clutter modern phones accumulate. MicroSD expansion softens the blow, but selling an 8GB phone at this price with 128GB storage feels like the assembly line stopped just before common sense arrived.

The colour-changing finishes — Thermo Orange, Silk Glow Purple, Mirage Green and Dive Blue — give the phone more personality than some rivals manage in their entire software strategy. The 1,100-plus service centres, one-year warranty and launch extras are useful too. Yet bundling cloud storage with a phone capped at 128GB has the faint aroma of selling an umbrella after drilling holes in the roof.

Early reviewers broadly like the battery, protection, main camera and novelty, while flagging the LCD, modest charging, limited storage, absent ultrawide and merely competent performance. That is the accurate reading. The Active Matrix Cube will entertain you, your friends and the first week of ownership; thereafter it is mostly a tiny employee assigned to announce notifications.

At an effective ₹22,999 with the launch bank offer, the Hot 70 Pro 5G becomes an interesting, slightly eccentric choice. At ₹24,999, it is asking AMOLED money for LCD priorities. At ₹27,999, paying extra RAM while storage stays parked at 128GB is not an upgrade so much as a financing plan for the same compromise.

Skip it at full price; the tiny television is not worth paying premium rent for a budget screen.
