₹1 lakh crore, zero-page valuation

Telangana’s latest land scandal currently has a headline number, an inquiry and no published valuation sheet.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy told the Assembly on September 16 that BRS leaders, supporters and relatives had allegedly “looted” land worth about ₹1 lakh crore. He ordered a Special Enquiry Team probe and a separate inquiry into land associated with K. Chandrashekar Rao’s Erravelli farmhouse. The farmhouse inquiry was reported to have a 30-day deadline. The evidentiary inconvenience is that no public property inventory, parcel-wise valuation, methodology, completed inquiry or government calculation supporting ₹1 lakh crore has been identified in the material reviewed. The reported acreage also arrives in several editions: 388, 439, 440, 700 and 1,000 acres, depending on which claim is being repeated.
K. T. Rama Rao’s response was simpler than the arithmetic: “Give us ₹1,000 crore and take all our properties.” He also challenged the government to deposit ₹1 lakh crore with Telangana’s poor if it stood by the figure. That is a political offer, not an independent valuation—but at least it asks the headline to show its homework.
The inquiry may establish facts. Until then, ₹1 lakh crore is an allegation wearing a very large number.
