110 km approved; Telangana still awaits the bill
The Centre has approved multi-tracking between Ghatkesar and Kazipet as part of a ₹10,021-crore package. The Telangana share of that bill remains a mystery.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a 110-km multi-tracking project between Secunderabad’s Ghatkesar and Kazipet. It is part of a five-project railway package estimated at ₹10,021 crore and planned for completion by 2029–30, according to the Ministry of Railways. The approval came on September 9, 2026.
The package covers 17 districts across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and is expected by the government to add about 540 km to the existing railway network, improve operational reliability and ease congestion. Those are projected outcomes, not benefits already delivered. The release also projects 47 million tonnes a year in additional freight traffic across the package.
The headline is useful for Telangana. The fine print is less generous: the Centre has not published the Ghatkesar–Kazipet project’s standalone cost, land requirement, detailed scope, phasing, tender schedule or construction start date. The BJP-led Centre has supplied the announcement; the bill and work calendar are apparently travelling by a slower train.
