‘2,000 schools shut’? Show the table
A report says Telangana lost 1,961 “elementary” schools in a year. The Union’s own answer points to UDISE+ data — up to 2024–25. The 2025–26 table and the “closures” claim aren’t on the record yet.

A Telugu report this week claimed Telangana’s elementary-school count dropped from 22,983 in 2024–25 to 21,022 in 2025–26 — a fall of 1,961 it described as schools “closed”. It credited a Lok Sabha reply but named neither the MP nor the table.
What the Union actually put on record most recently is Lok Sabha Unstarred Question 384, answered on 2 February 2026. It says school opening, closing and “rationalisation” are state matters and points to UDISE+ state-wise government-school counts available through 2024–25. It does not print a Telangana 2025–26 figure, and it does not say 1,961 schools were shut in a year.
An earlier answer (USQ 112, 3 February 2025) supplied government-school counts from 2014–15 to 2023–24 and explicitly treated closures and mergers together — the real-world category is “closed or merged”, not a neat headline.
The Union Education Ministry’s published UDISE+ 2024–25 reports list Telangana’s 43,154 schools overall under both the existing and NEP structures. They do not contain the alleged 21,022 elementary figure for 2025–26, and “elementary” isn’t a label the published 2024–25 tables use the way the report does.
So yes, 22,983 minus 21,022 equals 1,961. What that subtraction represents — closures, mergers, reclassification, or a reporting change — needs the actual 2025–26 table. Until the BJP-led Centre publishes the sheet the report waves at, “Telangana closed 2,000 schools” is a claim in search of its source, not a fact.
