248 TMC in, 28 TMC used? Show the ledger
KTR’s Jurala charge is politically sharp. The water department’s missing arithmetic is sharper.
The water has been released; the supporting arithmetic has not.
K. T. Rama Rao says Telangana had 248 TMC of Krishna water available this year but used only 28 TMC. The claim has been repeated in multiple reports. The supporting ledger, however, remains missing.
That does not make the Jurala problem imaginary. KRMB records Jurala’s recognised allocation at 17.84 TMC, with a designed command area of about 1.04 lakh acres. The state later sought 5 TMC from Karnataka’s Narayanpur reservoir; after Karnataka’s assurance, Telangana opened Jurala canals to protect standing crops. The crop-protection issue was real. The 248-to-28 calculation is not yet independently established.
The Congress government in Telangana has not publicly explained the calculation, its accounting period or why the department’s project-wise inflow, storage, release and utilisation records are not on the table. KTR’s charge deserves an answer, not a slogan. But until the ledger appears, “220 TMC withheld” is a political conclusion, not a documented number. For now, the government has released water — and withheld the arithmetic.
