39.9 lakh notices pending, deadline still September 16

Telangana’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls is carrying a reported backlog of 39.9 lakh undelivered notices, while the claims-and-objections deadline remains September 16. The calendar, as usual, appears to have been printed before the work was finished.

The Telangana Chief Electoral Officer, C. Sudarshan Reddy, was reported to have sought a two-to-three-week extension from the Election Commission of India. Of 92.8 lakh notices generated, 52.9 lakh—57%—were reportedly delivered and 39.9 lakh—43%—were still pending as of September 7. The figures come from a published report; the CEO’s written request and the underlying district-wise data were not found in the public documents reviewed.

A separate report said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy wrote to the ECI seeking four more weeks for claims and objections, along with three to four weeks for electors to respond to notices, public readings of draft rolls, urban help desks and additional staff. The ECI’s published guidance says claims and objections can be checked through the state CEO website or at an Electoral Registration Officer’s office. The CEO was quoted as saying, “We are waiting for EC’s response.” The BJP-led ECI now has the modest task of deciding whether voters get enough time to participate in a process already behind schedule.
