BCI freeze on NALSAR? Show us the letter
A report says the Bar Council of India told State Bar Councils to not enroll NALSAR’s 2026 grads “till further orders”. The letter isn’t public. Telangana’s lawyers-in-waiting are asked to take it on faith — from a Delhi regulator that hasn’t put the order on its own site.
The reported directive has not appeared on the BCI’s public notification pages.
A report says the Bar Council of India (BCI) has directed State Bar Councils not to enroll NALSAR University of Law students who obtained their law degree in 2026 “till further orders”. The sentence is quoted as: “Till further orders, no student of NALSAR University of Law, who has obtained the Law degree in the year 2026, shall be enrolled by any State Bar Council as an advocate.” The letter itself has not been published on the BCI’s own notification or press pages. According to the same report, the letter was addressed to NALSAR Vice-Chancellor Prof. Srikrishna Deva Rao and signed by BCI chairman Manan Kumar Mishra.
On the record we can verify: NALSAR is Hyderabad-based; Rao is VC in university documents; Mishra is identified as BCI chairman in institutional material; and Surya Kant is serving as Chief Justice of India. What we cannot verify from any public document yet is the BCI’s alleged cohort-wide bar on enrollment, the legal basis for it, or whether the Bar Council of Telangana has acted on it. The BCI’s website carries legal-education circulars, but no posted directive matching this one.
The reported trigger is student opposition to inviting the CJI as convocation chief guest. The scale and contents of that protest, and any allegation of faculty “groupism” or “instigation”, are Mishra’s claims as quoted in the report and remain just that — claims, with no published evidence and no response from NALSAR on the record.
Here is the Telangana interest: if a Delhi regulator is indeed freezing an entire Hyderabad cohort’s entry into the profession, it needs to show the order, the rule it relies on, and the path to unwind it. Until the BCI publishes the letter or the Bar Council of Telangana acknowledges receiving and implementing it, this reads as a headline without a file number. The BJP-led Centre loves central control by press note; the least it can do is post the note.
