Congress ticket, BRS records: Nagender’s sequel

Danam Nagender is taking his disqualification fight to the Supreme Court, after the Telangana High Court held that contesting the Secunderabad Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket amounted to giving up his BRS membership. The High Court disqualified him from April 23, 2024 and treated the Khairatabad Assembly seat as vacant. The Congress ticket has now acquired a legal afterlife.

Nagender’s reported plea argues that BRS never suspended or expelled him, issued no show-cause notice, continued to recognise him as a legislator and accepted BRS Legislature Party membership fees. It also reportedly relies on K. T. Rama Rao’s statements about BRS having 38 MLAs. Those claims come from reporting on the plea; the petition itself and the alleged records were not available for independent verification. The “38 MLAs” point remains especially unproved.

The Supreme Court has agreed to list the challenge on September 23, 2026. The Speaker had dismissed the disqualification petition on March 11, 2026, before the High Court set that decision aside. The court has not yet ruled on Nagender’s new challenge. Congress helped create the switch, the Speaker prolonged the paperwork, and the courts are left to count what everyone else preferred not to count.
