Food, drugs under one roof — on paper
Telangana says it’s unifying food safety and drug control as TG SAFE. The Health Department order everyone’s talking about isn’t public yet. The work starts with proof, not a headline.
The proposed food-and-drugs authority has been reported, but its order is yet to be made public.
The Telangana Health Department has reportedly created the Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE), placing Food Safety and the Drugs Control Administration under one umbrella with six wings and police support, according to an August 17 report that cites an order issued by Principal Secretary Dr Christina Z Chongthu. It also names IPS officer Avinash Mohanty as TG SAFE commissioner and says unified operations will begin in the CURE Region. According to that report, labs, enforcement and admin will be brought into a common framework, with risk-based inspections and prosecutions the pitch.
Here’s what is on record today. The state’s Drugs Control Administration has been operating under Avinash Mohanty, IPS — his July 7 press note lists him as Director General, and the department’s June–July updates run under his name. What is not on record: the Health Department order itself. No number, no full text, no uploaded PDF, no official TG SAFE page.
So the shape is promising — one roof, labs aligned, police attached — but the accountability starts with the document. Telangana built the inspection muscle that Delhi lectures about; it can post a PDF. When the BJP-led Centre drags its feet on states’ files, we call it out. When the Congress talks reform, it usually means a committee. Telangana can do better than both — publish the order, then show the raids.
