GHMC sanitation and Swachh Auto workers protested in Hyderabad on September 12 against what they described as a proposed handover of door-to-door garbage collection to private agencies. Several protesters who tried to move towards the Telangana Assembly were detained, according to published reports. A later rally of about 500 workers was stopped near Ayakar Bhavan before moving towards Tank Bund, causing traffic disruption for about an hour. (Telangana Today)
The workers said privatisation could affect their jobs, wages and security. One report attributed to protesters the claim that the work was being prepared for Re Sustainability Limited, formerly Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd. That remains an allegation: GHMC’s public tender page does not show a tender establishing such a transfer, and its RTI document records door-to-door collection as an existing function covering 92% of garbage collection, with 663 vehicles. GHMC, the Telangana Municipal Administration department and Re Sustainability have not publicly confirmed or denied the alleged proposal in the material checked. The workers have the protest. The public record, so far, has no tender to go with it.
