GHMC has rules, tenders and unanswered questions
A report alleges rising illegal construction and weak enforcement in Hyderabad. The available record confirms GHMC’s powers and some demolition activity, but not the headline figures.
GHMC’s rules and enforcement records exist; the current totals remain unclear.
A report has alleged that illegal buildings in the GHMC area have risen from about 30,000 to nearly 40,000, and that the corporation has 377 dangerous buildings. Neither figure is confirmed by an accessible GHMC record, court filing or government dataset.
The report also alleges that GHMC officials have not been inspecting complaints about unauthorised construction, encroachments and dilapidated buildings. That remains unverified. The corporation’s own records show that unauthorised construction and encroachment action are formal municipal functions, with processes for scrutiny, inspection and enforcement. Its tenders page also lists demolition-equipment notices issued in April and May 2026, including work in the Secunderabad zone. “No action” is therefore too broad; whether the action is adequate is the unanswered question.
Cyberabad Municipal Corporation has reported enforcement drives, but published figures vary by report and cannot be combined without the underlying releases. Telangana’s February 2026 reorganisation also created three corporations from the former GHMC area, making simple comparisons less tidy than the press release version. GHMC has not publicly supplied, in the material reviewed, its current inspection, demolition or pending-complaint totals. The numbers may be waiting for a document to join them.
