Hyderabad’s water line meets Pathur’s market

A Mallanna Sagar pipeline meant to carry Godavari water to Hyderabad is being built near Pathur in Gajwel mandal, where the Siddipet district administration lists an existing Pathuru Rythu Market. The water project has paperwork, scale and several thousand crore behind it. The market’s future appears to have less of all three.
A September 16 report said farmers from Pathur and neighbouring villages fear the works will remove part of the market and reported that sheds had been taken down and trenching begun. Farmers sought either a diverted alignment or a replacement market. Marketing Secretary Usha was quoted as saying HMWSSB had written to the Marketing Department and that she had forwarded the request to higher officials.
The record is clear on the pipeline and the market. It is not clear on the part that matters most locally: the final alignment, the exact area affected, whether the whole market will go, or whether an alternative has been sanctioned. The district website says the Marketing Department exists to bring producers and buyers together. The pipeline project has found Pathur; the department has yet to publicly show where the market will go.
