Karnataka ends session early; Nagendra resigns later

The Congress government in Karnataka ended the legislature’s monsoon session three days early, then received B Nagendra’s resignation four days later. The calendar had scheduled the session from August 13 to 27; both Houses were adjourned sine die on August 24, amid BJP and JD(S) protests over the Valmiki Corporation case. The Opposition alleged that the early closure helped the government avoid scrutiny of Nagendra. The government said the Opposition disrupted proceedings instead of giving notice and participating in a formal discussion. Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said there was no direct finding against Nagendra in the investigations, while the Enforcement Directorate’s October 2024 release named him the “primary accused and mastermind” and alleged that about Rs 89.62 crore was diverted, with funds routed through Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Nagendra, who had been re-inducted on August 3, announced his resignation on August 28. The Karnataka government has not published an acceptance order in the material reviewed. The Congress government’s timetable managed to end the session before the resignation arrived. The calendar, at least, got its closure.
