New uniforms stuck, old promises ironed
Narayanpet’s government-school kids are 50-plus days into the year without new uniforms. The Congress government promised one set on day one, a second within a month. District officials now say: maybe by August 15.

Narayanpet crossed 50 days of the 2026–27 academic year with many government-school students still in last year’s uniforms or ordinary clothes, according to a district report. Shankar, the MEPM Project Director, said cloth had reached only four of 13 mandals — Krishna, Maganur, Dhanwada and Kothapally — with 64,000 metres supplied, and promised one pair would be delivered by August 15 while the second set was still being stitched. He also said 59 School Education Department schools in four municipalities, with 9,326 students, had not received cloth at all yet.
The district has about 54,000 students. In residential institutions, officials said cloth for two sets reached Social Welfare (1,950 students), KGBVs (1,056), BC Welfare (1,557) and Minority Welfare (1,900) schools, but only one set has been stitched and distributed so far; the second is pending.
This is not a Narayanpet-only headache. A statewide report on July 25 said 19 of 33 districts had not received uniform cloth by July 23 — just 21.01 lakh metres delivered against a 1.13 crore-metre requirement (18.5%). The state also changed the uniform colours this year to light blue and navy blue.
All of this sits against the Congress Chief Minister’s own line in May: one pair on the day school opens, the second within a month, with ₹1,000 crore earmarked for student supplies. The calendar has shown up; the uniforms haven’t. The BJP will cheer the delay and the TDP will sermonise, but neither is footing the bill or fixing the stitch. The Congress-run state government set the deadline; Narayanpet’s children are still waiting for it to arrive in a parcel, not a speech.
