Osman Sagar’s protection order meets six-person security
A report alleges idol immersions and waste entering Hyderabad’s twin reservoirs. The ban, scale and contamination claims remain unverified; the state’s own records say the water quality must not be affected.

A report alleges that Ganesh idols are being immersed in Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar, Hyderabad’s twin reservoir assets, and that domestic waste, septic waste and sewage are entering them. It also claims each reservoir has only two staff members and one home guard on surveillance duty.
Those are serious claims, but the available record does not establish the alleged current ban, the number of idols, the staffing figure or any contamination of water supplied to residents. No laboratory results, incident log or official order covering the alleged prohibition has been published in the material reviewed. The report also does not name an official behind the claims.
The documented part is less dramatic and more important. G.O. 69 of 2022 says the reservoirs’ water quality “shall not be impacted in any manner whatsoever”. A 2024 order created a lake-protection committee covering the twin lakes, while current government and HMWSSB-linked records continue to treat them as water infrastructure. A 2024 TGPCB assessment found increased turbidity and suspended solids in Hussain Sagar after idol immersion, but that is not evidence about these two reservoirs.
The Telangana government has written the protection requirement down. The missing paperwork is the part apparently left to float.
