Telugu cinema’s recovery reaches week two
Industry voices point to six recent hits, but the public numbers remain more trailer than audited record.
Telugu cinema has retained audiences beyond opening weekend; the accounts are still awaited.
Telugu cinema has evidence of a second-week audience, not yet proof of a full recovery. An August 30 report said six films — including Korean Kanakaraju, Vishwanath and Sons and Irumudi — had been declared hits under “current industry standards”. The standards, conveniently, were not published.
The Telugu Film Chamber’s Mohan V called six hits in two months “very encouraging”. Filmmaker Madhura Sridhar said most films ran for four weeks with encouraging occupancy. But the available material contains no chamber dataset, exhibitor accounts, admissions figures or film-wise definition of “hit”.
The tracker estimates offer a narrower picture. Korean Kanakaraju recorded ₹19.98 crore gross and 14,150 shows in week one, followed by ₹5.51 crore and 6,000 shows in week two. Its third-week estimate fell to ₹57.36 lakh across 877 shows. It was still listed at several Hyderabad cinemas on August 30, according to BookMyShow.
That is a theatrical run worth watching. It is not an audited industry recovery. Telangana’s revised ticket slabs also make gross collections harder to read without admissions and average ticket prices. For now, Telugu cinema has retained audiences beyond opening weekend. The victory parade can wait for the accounts.
