BJP demands a textbook rewrite already partly printed
The party wants September 17 taught as liberation history. Telangana’s Class VIII textbook already records Hyderabad’s integration on that date; the fight is over framing, and tomorrow’s parade.
The textbook already records the date; the argument is over its framing.
The BJP wants Telangana school textbooks to carry a fuller account of the September 17, 1948 struggle, including what its leaders describe as the state’s freedom movement and nationalist participation. Telangana’s Class VIII Social Studies textbook already records that Hyderabad was integrated into the Indian Union on September 17, 1948, and discusses the Razakars, the Hyderabad State Congress and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. (SCERT Telangana)
Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao, Union ministers G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar, and Rajya Sabha MP K. Laxman made the demand as part of the BJP’s September 17 campaign, according to a report. The campaign includes a seminar, a paramilitary parade, cultural programmes and a book titled September 17 – Telangana Vimochana Dinamu. (Indian Express)
So this is less “put September 17 in the textbook” than “put our preferred account of September 17 in it”. Whether the BJP has submitted a formal proposal to SCERT or the School Education Department is not established in the available record.
The Union government’s event is scheduled for Thursday at Secunderabad Parade Grounds, with Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan as chief guest. The programme is planned from 9.30 a.m. to noon. (PIB; UNI)
Kishan Reddy alleged that the BRS and Congress avoided the term “Liberation Day” to please AIMIM. That remains a political allegation, not an established fact. The BRS used “National Integration Day” in 2022 and 2023, while the Congress government chose “Praja Palana Dinotsavam” in 2024, citing competing descriptions including “Merger Day” and “Liberation Day”. (Telangana government)
The parade is confirmed. The BJP’s textbook revolution is still awaiting paperwork.
