Telangana asks Centre to count BCs; BJP walks out
The Assembly wants a separate OBC category in Census 2027 and pre-loaded caste lists. The BJP chose the exit instead.
The Telangana Assembly has asked the Centre to add a separate BC/OBC category to the Census 2027 questionnaire.
The Telangana Assembly on September 11 adopted a resolution urging the Union government to add a separate OBC/BC category to the second-phase Census 2027 questionnaire. It also sought the pre-loading of recognised Central and state caste lists into the digital census system, to reduce spelling and classification errors. The Centre’s questionnaire is already catalogued as an official Census 2027 document dated August 14, 2026. The form’s reported “SC/ST/OC” category is the gap Telangana wants fixed; the PDF itself was not accessible for independent verification.
BJP legislators walked out while the resolution was being taken up, citing the Congress government’s failure to implement the Kamareddy BC Declaration. That is a separate political objection, not evidence that the party opposes counting OBCs. AIMIM and CPI were reported to have supported the resolution, though no official vote record was available. Reports called the resolution unanimous, but the BJP’s walkout makes the exact voting circumstances unclear.
The Assembly has made the request. Whether the Centre changes the questionnaire, or even acknowledges the request, remains to be seen. Delhi has supplied the form; Telangana is asking it to supply the category too.
